Density

A list of the species in the area under survey should be compiled first. The quadrat is then randomly tossed several times within this area. After each throw, the number of each species within the quadrat area is recorded. A total of 100 tosses can be made by a group after which the average for each is found. The density of a species is calculated by dividing the average number of timed the species occurs within the quadrat ( frequency per Quadrat) by the area of the Quadrat.

Example : frequency of Tridax = 53

Number of tosses = 100

Average number of Tridax per Quadrat toss
= 53÷100 = 0.53

Area of quadrat = 1 square metre or 1m

:. Density of Tridax = 0.53÷ area of quadrat

   = 0.53÷ 1 = 0.53 per m2
