Modern forms of stratification

Modern stratification is based on western education and possession of wealth. In Nigeria, western education and wealth have introduced some form of class community. At present , the following classes of people can be identified. Upper upper class, upper middle class, upper lower class, lower upper class, loser middle class and finally the lower lower class.
These various classes can,  however , be broadly divided into three main groups. These are upper, middle and lower classes.

A social class can be defined as a status group whose members posses social characteristics such as  incomes, education, duties, dresses etc which distinguish them from the other members of the society. People I'm category a fit properly into the upper upper , upper middle and the upper lower classes while those in B fit into lower upper, and lower middle classes, group C , however, can be regarded as the lower lower class.

There is no distinction between where one class of people  ends and where the other starts. One classification, therefore, represents and idea type of situation.
For example , some people may occupy junior positions in the civil service but may be wealthier than those called senior civil servants.

Our school community is also stratified. The principal and the vice principal constitute the upper class including  some senior  tutors , followed by the rest of the teachers who can still be divided into graduate band non graduate teachers.
The school prefects form another class followed by the rest of the student body who are, however, grouped into senior and junior classes. Social class systems have found a way also in religion. In some churches, the priest occupies the first position among the church community and, in rare cases, the wealthy  ones among the congregation occupy the next cadre to the priest because they have influence, when it comes to financial matters in the church. The priest may not be rich but he us respected as the divine appointee.
In traditional religion, the priest and priestess are feared and respected because they are seen as appointees of the gods, goddess and the ancestors. Likewise , the Imam in the mosque occupy the top most class among the Islamic worshippers.

Inter Community Relationship

Communities in the world are many and they vary in population, size and functions. Some communities are endowed with more resources than others. In some communities there are more social amenities such as roads, hospital, schools, banks, communication systems etc than in the others. Because of the reasons above, some communities are able to perform certain functions better than others.

Therefore, communities depend on other communities for any function which their communities cannot perform. In other words no community is self sufficient. People in the forest area produce forest products to exchange for products not available in their areas.

Fisherfolks sell their fish to other people in other to use their cash to buy their basic needs. Different communities produce  different goods and products for exchange  through trade and commerce.

For us to understand inter community relationship, let us group the community relationship into three broad categories. They are : urban rural, rural rural and urban urban relationships.

Urban rural relationship

There are urban and rural communities all over the world. A lot of difference exist between these communities.
However , it is necessary to Note that an urban community Developed from the rural stage.

Several rural communities could join together to form an urban community.

Urban communities may differ from one to the other but they have some peculiarities.

An urban community is made up of large number of people occupying a large area of land. Most are industrial and commercial societies. Educational institutions of different grades and social amenities Luke good roads, telephones, community halls , pipe borne water, electricity , hospitals etc, are provided in urban communities.
Apart from these, there are different types of beautiful buildings which serve as offices, hotels etc.
The communities are usually government administrative centres with federal , state and local council offices established all over the place.

The rural communities, however , are mostly agricultural communities. Rural people of Nigeria make use of well and stream water instead of pipe born water in the villages and towns. They depend in kerosene lamps, lanterns , wick lamps  and at times gas lamps for their sources of light at night.
They often lack amenities like hospitals, courts, good roads, and libraries etc. In the Villages, shrine where villagers worships their ancestors are built.

Beside farming, people in rural area engage themselves in trading, fishing, traditional arts and crafts such ad tailoring , blacksmithing, pottery and carving. Hunting is not usually done as a full time job but as hobby by most farmers at their leisure time. Some farmers produce agricultural and food crops and above their needs in order  to sell surplus to the urban community members. Urban and rural community members trade together. Rural people buy manufactured products from the urban communities. Also urban area offer job and educational opportunities to the people from the rural settlements.
Apart from that , the rural dwellers got to know of important information from those coming from the urban Urban communities.

Rural Rural relationship

Different rural districts are not endowed with the same natural resources, therefore , each rural district concentrates on what it can produce and buys what it cannot produce. Their is a trade between different rural communities. Inequality of mental , physical and natural resources of the members of different rural communities results in the exchange of ideas , services and products.

Relationship among rural communities could be in areas of religion, politics, marriage and social sphere. Inter community marriages often occur between members of different rural communities. Thus, some kingship arise between one  rural community band the other.

When rural districts happen to be members of the same political organization, members see themselves as belonging to one another.

At times , two different rural communities may have similar social organizations. Such organizations or association make people to think of themselves as having common origin. For exams , there are certain organizations or association which are typical of Yoruba , Hausa , igbo etc.

Compound buildings of Hausa rural areas are often of flat top. This is unlike that of the Yorubas in the forest areas and Igbo's whose houses have thatched roofs of either bamboos, palm fronds or leaves of trees.

Bonds of friendship exist between members of rural communities because of the relationship listed above and some others we cannot, mention here. You are therefore, requested to find out some of these relationship your selves.

Despite these relations, there is bound to be some conflicts as it is typical of all human relationships. Conflict could stem from struggles between different rural communities to acquire more resources at the expense of the others, for example, competition over fishing in a particular stream, river pond.
Competition over Land, chieftaincy etc may bring about conflicts and, in some serious cases, result into physical combat or clashes which could cause loss of life and property. For instance , when a local government headquarter is to be located  or other social amenities are to be sited, one cannot rule out the possibility of conflict among the communities concerned.
One village may want pipe borne water and electricity when it had secured a community health center. This could annoy members of the other villages which have not yet secured any amenities at all. This is one of the causes of conflicts in rural rural relationship. Since all rural communities cannot boast of being self sufficient; co operation Is very important between two or more rural communities. Hence, the needed for cooperation is always their primary concern. Thus, there is always cooperation and competition among them.

Urban urban Relationship

As earlier indicated in this write up and previous, an urban community could be made up of a large number of rural communities joined together. Such a community could perform administrative, commercial or industrial functions. Ibadan is a commercial and administrative centre.
Abuja is an administrative centre while Lagos is Both an administrative and industrial centre. Where people of two commercial centre sells the same products competition arises. The commodities available in each urban centre may differ hence there is need for inter Urban trade exchange. Nevertheless, some Urban centres act as link between the rural producers and industrial centres.
If it happens that there are two close Urban communities, the growth of one may lead to the decline of the other. In other words, the growth of one urban area may serve as an attraction to people in other urban areas who may withdraw from where they live to settle in more developing urban area. This is because there is supposed to be better opportunities economically, socially and politically in the more developed urban area. Two urban centres can be under the same administration. For instance, Lagos and Ikeja are under the Lagos state government, ogbomoso and Ibadan under Oyo state government, Auchi and Benin city under the Edo state government etc

The traditional forms of stratification

In traditional societies in Nigeria, stratification  is based on the authority each person has in the community; and usually, possession of authority is based on tradition of the people.

Nigerian traditional soc are headed by kings, chiefs, Obas, Emirs etc depending on the area concerned. A kingdom can be regarded ad an area of authority of a king, an obi or an Emir.

Stratification In some areas is based on age and title as found among the Igbo's. People of the same age form age grades. The highest age grades are made up of the most aged people in the community.

Though they may not be rich, the old people have greater influence on matters affecting the community especially those relating to traditions and customs of the community.

Each kingdom is headed by a king who will be the highest authority and is followed by senior chiefs, village heads, ward leaders and compound heads in that other.
The king performs function ad the executive, judicial and legislative head. Also, hr possesses religious and economic powers. In some areas , the king has control over land and property in his area.
As a religious head, he is feared and respected by other members of his community.
It is often believed that the king is appointed leader by the gods and ancestors of his land. Therefore , in the past , people paid homage to the king at his palace by bringing various gifts and goodwill. The king  is helped by senior chiefs and elders of the kingdom.

Next to the chiefs were the title holders and men who formed the military force of the kingdom. The military body constituted men who were strong enough to protect the kingdom from external attack or who kept public peace and order in the community.

In the villages , "Baales" as in the Yoruba community, performed similar functions as chiefs. Each Yoruba village is divided into wards headed by ward heads who were usually the eldest men in the community. Such elders were referred as "ward Heads".

The people of eastern part of Nigeria have stratification based on age groups. The teenagers formed the lowest stratum of the social class.
In eastern Nigeria, the elders and title holders formed the ruling class.

With the advent of European civilization, social stratification in most traditional, societies have undergone very rapid and useful changes to suit modern times.

Social Stratification

In some societies, members recognise and accept the fact that not all families or individuals that make up the community have equal access to the same privileges, power and prestige. In such a community, the population is divided into various classes, each according to position, privileges and power held. Communities are this classified or ranked in levels. Where such communities exist, we say that the society is stratified.

Social stratification , therefore, implies a state where every individual has his position in the community but the importance of his position varies. For instance , the position of a king, a governor, the president, the principal of a school etc command some respect within the society but these  various degrees of importance.

The position of a receptionist is less important than that of an office  secretary. Messengers are important but not as important as that of a teacher in the secondary school.

Modes Of stratification

There are several modes of stratification depending on a particular society's values.
Most societies use particular power, religious values, economic power and social values. In Africa, stratification is mostly based on tradition but recent stratification is usually based on education, economic power (property, income, occupation) and personal achievement. In India , social stratification is known as the Caste system. The most important stratification in India involves the priest (Brahmin) , the nobles (Kshatriya) , the serfs (Shudra ) following in that order of importance.

In Nigeria, some form of caste system is also practised in parts of Anambra and IMO states. This form of caste system is known as 'OSU'.

India community stratification is based on religion. Hence the priests who occupy the top positions are regarded as being purer than other members of the social ladder.
The caste system is a permanent stratification which is strictly upheld by all members. Therefore, members of a certain caste are not supposed to marry from a different caste. In other words, a 'Brahmin' is prohibited from marrying from the 'Shudra' caste, a 'Kshatriya' is not expected to marry from the a 'Vaishya' etc.

Members of a 'higher'  caste look down on non members of their caste as being inferior to them.

Because of rigid adherence to caste regulations or strict observance of permanent caste rules, members of a caste born into one caste cannot improve upon their position in order to move from a lower caste to a higher caste by acquisition of wealth , property , education etc.

The caste system is unlike the system of class stratification where one class is subject to changes in the course of time.

In the class system of stratification, there are no rigid of strict permanent rules to maintain a definite class structure or shape. In class stratification one can change his position or class by his personal achievement.
A farmer's child can be an engineer, a doctor , a lawyer, etc if he studies well.

Unlike in other form of class societies, traditional societies are as rigid as the caste systems.

The Duties of the Members in the Community

Duties are social roles performed by members of the community. The individual lives in a community. This 'Community' can be his family, his kinship group, the village or the nation. The need to regulate or organise the relationship between one individual and another in the community arises from the fact that each individual wants to satisfy his needs and to attain the best achievement. Each person is entitled to his rights in many respects, every right of the individual is accompanied by duties. For the individual to get his rights,  therefore, he or she must perform those duties assigned to him or her by the community.

In other words, rights are claims for the performance of our duties in the community, a community trues to protect the basic of Its members.

In every community, each family is expected to perform certain roles. The roles in the Community are defined through written and unwritten laws, customs and norms of the community. The roles of the family in the community include giving birth to children who will replace the dead members of the community. If new members are not born into the community, the community will not be able to survive in the future because member get old and die. It is , however, believed that communities can Survive if people move from their former communities  to join other communities but the fact still remains that this process may not be continuous and, yet, those who join the new communities may grow old and die the same.

Apart from giving birth , the family performs other functions among which are economic, political as well as social.
Concerning economic functions, the family engages in various occupations such as livestock rearing, farming, fishing, trading, etc. In order to get food and money to take care of its members. It is the duty of the family to ensure a rise in the standard of living of its members who are part of the community.

A position that one attains in the community is initially acquired through his membership of the family. There are several positions acquired within the family, for example, husband, wife, son, mother in-law, father in-law , son in law, daughter in law, etc.
Ownership of property in some societies is acquired through the family. Where  there is patrilineal inheritance, the eldest child or children inherit their father's property. The opposite is the case of matrilineal inheritance. Both matrilineal and patrilineal inheritance had been explained  in one of my previous write up, where a person lives, owns property and married is determined by the family and the community as a whole.

The family is basically responsible for the maintenance of law and order in the community. It is the duty of the family to see to it that it trains it members to be responsible citizens who obey the laws and keep order in the society. This would bring about development and progress in the community. In Some  communities certain family are responsible for providing leaders for the communities.
In such communities, titles are inherited rather than achieved. Even at the present moment in Nigeria, one's political leaning or political association is more or less determine by members of his family. However, it is not a common thing for two brothers from the same family to belong to different political parties.

Religious associations are most often prescribed by the family to its members.
Therefore. It is not surprising to find in hone all members being Christians or Muslims. It is a duty of the family to establish a religion for its members.

The Influence of the Community on the Family

Communities consist of different types of families which resulted from different kinds of marriages.
Reference should be made to my previous write up on types of families and types of marriages. Human community, as a matter of fact, is a tree with it'd branches as families forming a unit through which the development of the branches of the tree produce the leaves which manufacture food  for the tree. The branches alone cannot produce the leaves without the support of the tree itself. The family, therefore,  depends on the community to a great extent for its survival. Hence , the community has overriding power over the family.

Laws and customs are prescribed by the  community as a whole for its members. Therefore , it Is the community that provides the means of learning them. In every community , there are institutions which serve ad means of societal customs and laws which serve the purpose of teaching and learning them.
The family is one of the various institutions. Others are the church, the school, ,the village, the mosque, etc.

At various levels of a person's life, he learns through the institutions provided by his community.
People are expected to behave in certain ways as expected by the community. For instance. The church provides teaching on morality as supported by the community and it is the family which sees to it that once teachings are provided they are put to practical use by it'd members.

A family may be branded as bad if any of its members behave in certain ways contrary to the expectation of the community. And for such behaviour certain forms of punishment may be metted to the family as a whole by members by members of the community. Such punishment can take the form of total rejection of the family by the members of the family or withdrawal of community members from associating with the peculiar family. Therefore , rules of proper conduct are approved by the community.

Roles and duties of each family are defined and prescribed  by the community.

Authority in the Community

In every community , there is authority. That is, all communities have a person or group of persons who hold power and such persons  or group have to be  obeyed by  members of the community or communities. For example, in the past , a a village or town was usually ruled by a chief who, in Yoruba land, is referred to as the 'Oba' there was usually a big town referred to as "King's town". In the Obas town, there were ward leaders or chiefs who helped the Obas or  head chief were small towns and villages which were under the leadership of village heads or lesser chiefs. The chiefs performed the functions of law makers and court jurists. As administrators, they saw it that each member of the community performed his /her duties and obligations.

At present, there are still Kings in Nigeria but their functions are reduced to that of local traditional heads.

The authority in Nigeria today is the government.

There are three main arms of government, namely: The Judiciary, the Legislative and the executive. The judiciary sees to it that the courts maintain the laws of the land. The legislature is charged with the  responsibility of making laws.
The executive sees to it that the people obey the laws.

Traditional political System

The are many ethnic groups in Nigeria, the major groups are the Hausa, the Yoruba, the Igbo, the Fulani and the kanuri.

Before the Europeans came to Nigeria, the Yoruba were ruled by their Obas and chiefs. The Fulani's were ruled by their Emir's. The Igbo's were ruled by their obi's, chiefs and village Heads.

Traditional Government in Hausaland

The Hausas  and Fulanis  live in the northern part of Nigeria. Before the holy war (jihads) , the Hausas ruled the Fulanis.

After the Holy war, the Fulanis started to rule the Hausas.

Their rulers in Hausa land are called Emirs. Some of the famous emirs are the Emirs of Gwandu, Emir of Sokoto, Emir of Ilorin and the Emir of Zaria. Most of the Hausas and Fulanis are Muslims.

The Emir and their officials rule their areas, some of their officials are :-

I. Waziri (Head official)  ii. Maaji ( the Emir treasurer) iii. Galadima (the man in charge of the capital) iv. Madawaki (the man in charge of the soldiers)  v. The Hakimi (the man in charge of tax).

Many districts form an emirate. The sharia law was used in all the enemies. An alkali was the judge in the court.

Traditional Government in Yoruba land

The Yoruba live mostly in Ogun, Oyo, ondo, Lagos and kwara states

Some important Obas in Yoruba land are : the Ooni of Ife, the aalafin of Oyo, the a lake of Egbaland, the Owa of ijeshaland, the Olubadan of Ibadan and Ora of Ila.

The  Yorubas live in towns and villages, the chiefs take care of the Villages and small towns. The chiefs are called 'Bales'

The  Oba-in-council :  the Oba and his senior chiefs form the Oba-in-council which rule both the towns and villages.
The senior chiefs advise the Oba on how to rule the people.

Traditional government in Igbo land

The Igbo's mostly live in anambra, IMO, Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Parts of Delta, Rivers and Cross river states. The Igbo's had no central government. The village assembly made the laws for  the people.

The village assembly is made up of village heads and men with titles. The age groups in Igbo land clear bushes, clean the villages and settle quarrels among themselves. They help to keep the law and order in igbo land.

Traditional Government of the Efiks

he Efiks  live mostly in the Cross river state. The Efiks have chiefs that rule them among the chiefs that rule the Efiks are Obong of Oyo etc.

People who go against the laws are punished by chiefs in the native courts.

Location and Characteristics of Communities

There are different locations for various communities depending on the purpose for which the community was established. For agricultural purposes communities are established on flatlands, valleys and on hill slopes if only the lands are fertile. A town or village may be established at various locations without any relations to the fertility of the soil. This situation may arise because of political, social or economic reasons.
One cannot easily enumerate all the  community. But there are certain characteristics that are common to all communities.

Characteristics of Communities

A. Members of a community live in a defined area and co operate to certain extent. In a community, a person is supposed to play the role of one's position without allowing personal feelings to obstruct or interfere with others roles and to develop strong feeling about fellow communities members. For example, one cannot protect his property without the cooperation of other members of his community.

B. Members of a community have common goals and aspirations. Members of a community organise themselves along  well defined ways in order to achieve their common interests.

C.  There are clearly defined and roles for any given community. Communities are stratified: each member of a community occupies a certain. Position and thus performs certain. Duties assigned to his position.

D.  Members of a community are related. Community members are related by family, kinship, ethnic, cultural, historical, religious , territorial, etc ties. Therefore , members of a community feel as one family unit

How is a Community Formed ?

A community is formed when people of common interests , aims and aspirations love together in an area. People of a community may not necessarily be of the same ethnic group , race , religion, political grouping etc.

A new community may be voluntarily formed or may be formed by involuntary means.

Involuntary movement caused by civil wars and inter tribal wars in the past drove some people to settle at one place or the other thereby establishing a new community.
During the Nigerian civil war (1967-1970), some ethnic groups moved from their original places of settlement to settle in the new locations to avoid attack by soldiers. In the past slaves who were transported from their original homes and latter released by the activities of the British anti slavery movements in the 19th century grouped themselves together and established a new community.
People had to live close to powerful chiefs and leaders in order to avoid enemy attack and as a result , some communities came into being.

Religious persecution made some ethnic groups to move down towards the forest areas of Nigeria.

The Fulani holy wars (jihads) carried out by uthman Dan fodio drove some northern tribes from their original homes to establish where they felt protected.

As a result of unconscious movements, communities may be established. Hunters and traders especially may establish community without being forced.

When hunters happen to find any area where they are likely to continuously get animals to hunt, they may establish huts which may latter develop into a village community.
Also when traders happen to find an area where they can easily practise their trade away from home, they may stay there and latter establish such an area as a community.
Villages , towns and cities may expand and join one another to bring about complete development of new communities. Such communities are formed as a result of past experience shared common history, aims and aspirations, identical culture, common religion, ,common territory, etc. This is also another example of unconscious development of communities.

People move to establish communities voluntarily. For example, they may decide to settle in areas where economic opportunities are favourable. Or where  standards of living are though to be higher than those of their original home.
Like wise, people may voluntarily move and settle elsewhere because they want freedom of though and beliefs or as an adventure and sheer interests in certain parts of the country.

There are several other reasons why people establish communities. Economic depression may also compel people to seek work elsewhere. Natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes may also force people to new locations to establish communities.

How does one become a member of a community ?

There are several ways by which one becomes a member of a community. For example, one becomes a member of a community if one is born within the said community. This is referred to as membership by birth. On the other hand. If a person moves from one area to settle in another area, then one becomes a member of his present community. But membership of people joining a new community from elsewhere is not automatic. Such a member may be accepted or rejected by older members of the community depending  on whether such a new member conforms or not with the rules and regulations of his new community.

A person maybe accepted as a member of a community if he accepts the way of life of that community and secures a dwelling place.

In Nigeria, one may move from his community to settle in a new environment for economic, political, social, religious and other reasons.
Farmers from the forest areas in Nigeria may move to settle in other forest areas different from their original place of settlement to find larger and more fertile land. This is a common practice among the farmers of Oyo , ondo, kwara states. Traders in the country may move from their homes to settle in cities and towns where they can easily carry out their trade. There are other occasions when school leavers and jobless individuals move into urban areas to find jobs and to settle in the new urban community.

Political and religious persecution in the past could drive people out of their original homes to settle in a new peaceful environment for their own safety. Each  community is guided by its own rules and regulations and if such people agree to abide by them, they will become members of the new community. There are several ways and purposes for which a community may be formed.

Universality of Man

Social studies is a study of man in the society. Man as a social animal is the nucleus of the study. I have mentioned in my last write that man can easily adapt to various environment in which he finds himself. In this same vein , men , the world over, are influenced in their physique by environmental conditions.

Differences are essential characteristics of natural occurrences. For two things to be named differently, they must be strikingly different. Homo sapiens, is a universal description of man, but, they possess various structures of body form.

Culture is a universal characteristic of human society,  yet each culture is different from the other. Some similarities are found, but in historical experience, interpersonal relationship and natural endowment which all affect Hunan living; some differences are inevitable. Within a race, there might be different cultures as shown in the different ways of life. Concerning individual tendency, no single individual  is exactly the same as the other. People may resemble one another in some respects, they are still bound to be different from one another.
Adaptation is an essence in man's survival because, environment can wickedly eliminate the weak or subject them to hazards for lack of adaptive qualities.

Mans ability to adapt to different environmental conditions allow him to live in and exploit different kinds of environment. It also enables him to survive. Man can modify his environment to suit his livelihood.

The core of universality of man is that though there are cultural and environmental diversities, man belongs to a single species with the same basic need. Man is basically the same everywhere.

Races And Racism

Race is used to denote groups of people connected by a common descent or origin, or those with certain peculiarities in common. It is a socio-geographical   term used for the  major subdivision of a species.

The idea of race'  these days, has been misused continuously in sociopolitical sphere. It has become an object of political propaganda. There are various criteria for race classification. Among them are skin colour, hair type, skull proportions, stature, shape of head and face, shape of nose and hair.

However, scientists claim that skin colours of all human beings contain the same pigment of dark granulated substance. If a little amount of it is present in the blood, it gives a brown colour , while much of the pigment gives a black colour. Skin colour can be black brown, chocolate, white etc. Hence , racial classification on skin differences does not indicate the superiority of one race over the other. It is simply a matter of biological coincidence.

As to hair type, it may be wavy, curly or spiral;  it may also be blackish or brownish (like that of the Americans). The nose of some people may be flat , narrow , broad or high.

Hence , people in different geographical regions in the world who share common features may be referred  to as a race. In other words, race refers to the biological classification of people with common physical characteristics.

On this basis, race are classified into various classes. Four among them are Mongoloid, Caucasoid, Negroid and Australoid. They will be described in turn under ' people of the world' .  it could be sufficient here to say that, the Negroids  are  found in Africa, the Australoid s in southern Asia and Australia, the Caucasoids in Latin America, Europe and North Africa. The mongolpids are found in Eastern Asia and American.

Racial difference s are becoming Less distinct  with racial intermixture and intermarriages. This is being facilitated by modern development in communication and transportation. It is also caused by war, slave trade, inter continental economic activities and migration.

The claim that one race is superior to another is a political propaganda. This has been by the colonized African countries in their fight for independence.

In socio-political respects, 'race' as a term has been  wrongly used to mean differences in cultural bases. In this sense, one culture is said to be superior to the other. It clearly shows traces of sentimentalism, prejudice, and superiority complex. That is the beginning of social conflicts popularity called apartheid' and 'racial discrimination' which are found mainly in south Africa, pre-independence Zimbabwe and even in the united states of america.

Racism or apartheid, then has no scientific basis, since except on biological and cultural distinction. It cannot be claimed that a white man is more intelligent than a Blackman.

This subheading has examined the differences among human beings the world over. It could be sufficient to say '  that this topic is incomplete if the universality of man is not treated.

Uniqueness Of Man

In Examining the origin of man, from the African history premises, man resembles his ancestors. If we look at man's history from Darwin's point of view, man shares some characteristics with the animals. Yet, man possesses  certain qualities which other animals do not have. He is a unique animal.

Physically man is unique in many respects. Man stand erect and walk erect. Man does not walk on his limbs as other animals do. He works on two feet. Man also has longer arms and legs, which are even longer than his body. The backbone of man is  shaped in manner that enables him stand erect. However , that of animal is made a bow shape that only enables movement on four limbs.

Finally each of man's two hands has five fingers with which he holds things and eats his food. But, that of other animals are, used to support them while walking and this is why many animals use their mouth to pick their food.

Biologically, man has a more complex  brain than the animals. Structurally, the brain is even larger. This is the core of all differences that exist between the animal and man. It has enabled man to live a fuller life, develop his culture and technology; and he achieved the present status quite distinct from that of the animals. More importantly, a sharp retentive memory.

Socially , man has certain characteristics which distinguish him from the rest of the animals. Man has culture which he jealously guides. Every human society develops culture which it passes from one generation to another.
Culture is a way of life peculiar to a group of people. However, there are ample evidences in recent years that animals also have a form of culture. It will be sufficient to say that has a more complex culture; religion, marriage and leadership are few of the social qualities found among them men. But not among the animals.

Adaptation to the environmental  conditions is one of the factors for human uniqueness.

He has a shelter, and clothing to protect himself from cold. In hot situation or climate the air conditioner is also available to provide fresh and cool air. We can therefore, see that technology is an aspect of culture which enables man to fit into his environment effectively.

Another aspect of culture that distinguish man is language. With the use of language, culture is preserved and passes from one generation to another but animals do imitate one another; they cannot record their experiences.

Behavioural:
Man's behaviour is a function of his culture. He behaves in socially acceptable ways and he provides himself with those things that make him adapt to any situation in which he finds himself. He makes tools to achieve his ends of obtaining food, tilling ground, building houses etc. Man discovered that it is necessary to cooperate with others in the society. In the society, man and value create class difference. A society comprises of classes of the rulers and the followers, the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak, yet , there are established rules of governance for the  up keep of the society.

Man adapts to cultural variation. If an African should travel to the Arctic region, which is relatively cold, he would quickly adapt himself by wearing thick sweaters. He also changes his food to that which is available. The Africans who live in the tropics, adapt to their climatic conditions just as the Eskimos and the other races who live in the temperate regions. As distinct from animals, men are inter dependent in their economic system. Africans may import food and technology from Europeans. This is because man has developed a sense of co operative living. Those who live in the riverine areas build their houses in certain ways and do such occupation like fishing.

Man is more naturally developed than animals, more intelligent and more understanding and the the bible supports this. After creating all other creatures, God asked Adam, the first man, according to the bible, to call them names. Verse 19 of Chapter 2 of Genesis has this to say ".............  and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof" . And verse 20 concluded, ' and Adam gave names to all cattle and to the fowl of the air, and every beast of the field! This is a biblical testimony to the supremacy of man over animals and, indeed, all other creatures.

Comparison of Various Myths and Stories of Origin of Man

I have considered four stories in all, so far in this topic about origin of man. We have religion and  Yoruba mythology which recognise the almighty Godcor the olodumare as the creator of the universe and all therein.

They both claim that in the state of nature, this earth was flooded with water. It was with the command of the supreme being that land emerged. Both also hold that man was created, and  most essentially when God Breathed into his nostrils, man became a living soul. A single claim is outstanding, that man was created by the Supreme Being.

Darwin's evolution theory is completely different; it does not believe that man developed out of a series of biological transformation. It resembles the historical  origin of man in Africa story in that man developed in stages, and that man developed out of an apelike mammal which also Developed from fossils.

History and evolution myths do not make something clear, that is, who created the fossils and the inanimate matter?

After all, nothing could arise from nothingness. Another question is to know whether man has stopped to develop. If not , why has man stopped from about 100,000 years ago to develop into something else?

The problem which student and graduate should address their mind to is, which of these stories is read? Why should we prefer one to the other?  The account of the origin of man is an unsettled controversy.

Origin of Man

The history of the origin of man starts with the identification of what man himself is.

Man Is a social animal. He is a mammal of the same species with the animals. This is why man is being referred to as higher animal. Biologically, man shares certain characteristics with animals. But he is different because he develops his culture , and passes it to his generation as rules or ideas in the society. Literally, the word man is used to refer to both male and female human beings.
The story of the origin of man is a subject of endless controversy. No single source  is exhaustive, there is no universal acceptance as regards the story.

However , we shall discuss in this write up three sources of the story of origin of man, namely:  scientific evolution, beliefs or religion, and myths or legends.

Myth: myths or legends exist about  almost all aspects of human living. Various stories is passed from one generation to another. But one thing should be noted from the outset, that the story of the origin or the origin of the earth itself.
Myth has it that man and the gods as related in certain days though the gods are superior to human beings. The following is the myth of the origin of man that comes from the "Yorubas".

The Yoruba people of Nigeria have a creation myth which says that Ile- Ife (now a university town in Oyo state)  is the original home of man on earth. Myth has it  that, it is the cradle of mankind.

The supreme Being, God,  is called 'Olodunmare' or Olorun' in Yoruba culture. He is the creator. He sent 'Obatala' also known as 'Orinsanla' (as god of whiteness) to create the earth  with the assistance  of  sixteen elders or lesser gods, among whom were  oduduwa, sango, IFA etc.  Obatala was to lead this group. He was given a calabash full of sand , a palm fruit and a bird.

The leader of the group thought that he could do the job better if he took some palm wine. He therefore, decided to drink palm wine. He therefore, decided to drink  palm wine, at the gate of heaven . he drank in excess and became intoxicated. He  into a long and deep sleep. He could , therefore, not discharge his assignment.

Oduduwa, who heard olodumare's instruction to 'Orisanla' took the calabash of sand and other materials having discovered the weakness of the leader. He proceeded to create the earth.

At first, the earth was a spread of ocean, oduduwa spread the sand then planted the palm fruit on the land that Developed therefrom. Hence, palm  tree because the first tree on earth, while the bird became the first set of animals on earth, while oduduwa himself became the leader of man and gods. It all started at ile Ife. This is the story of the creation of the earth. Since 'Orinsanla' failed to accomplish his principal duty of creating the earth, olodumare gave him another assignment : moulding man. 'Ogun' , the god of iron had to make human bones. After the moulding, the high God, ' Olodumare' breathed the breath of life, and man was created.

Oduduwa then became the ruler of the earth. He became the king of Ife.

Olodumare sent other divinity such as 'IFA' , 'sango', and others to maintain peace on earth. IFA is the diviner, while sango is the god of retribution.

There are however, other myths: such as that of the Chinese , the Greek, the mende of sierra Leone and the ashante of Ghana.

The Ashante tribe of Ghana believe that man came from a certain hole  and since been living on earth, while the hole has now become a shrine.

The Greek myth had it that Prometheus the titan god was sent to create a race of man. He made man out of clay, while the Greek god Zeus, breathed life  into them.

Prometheus came and lived among these people ; he taught them how to live in the society. He also taught them how to fetch their food.

The mende people of sierra Leone creation story had it that one  ngewocolo who was living in a cave created man. He was said to be a powerful spirit that could command nature.

We have been able to see that each society has different creation myth peculiar to it. One thing is common to all these mythologies: man was created, he did not evolve.

Religion: One idea is associated with religion, and that is " belief" . many thongs do not happen in our presence, not even in the presence of our forefathers; we just have to believe them.

At the very centre of every religion, is the story of creation  of earth and man, and the omini competence of the supreme being. But along with religion is belief. They are a concurrent pair of ideas.

The story if the origin of man in Yoruba fashion has identified God or (Olodumare' as the ' initiator or director of the whole affairs. He is the only maker of life. Every man kneels in the presence of olodumare to  choose his destiny known as Ori or Ayanwo. In igbo belief, the supreme Being (chukwu )  created man and assigned to each man his 'chi' which is the Yoruba equivalence of 'Iri' or ' Ayanmo'.

The most comprehensive  source of account of origin of man is given by the holy bible.

The first book in the Bible Genesis in chpt 1 verse 1 has this to say: " In the beginning. God created the heaven  and the earth". Verse 2 continues '....... Earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters'.

About the creation of man, verse 26 , of chpt 1  of Genesis Has this to say, ' and God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have Dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air........'

In verse 27 , we have it thus, so God created man in his own image, in the image of God , he created him; male and female, he created them'.

The Bible says: God created man out of clay, and he breathed a breathed a breath of life into his nostrils. Chapter 2:7 ' and the lord God formed man of the dust of the ground , and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living Eve, the first woman woman was made of the man's ribs and God breathed a breath of life into her, and she equally became a woman.

This biblical story of man's origin  seems the most accurate and the mist comprehensive of all myths and stories. It is widely accepted or believed in many quarters.

These two beliefs about the origin of man are still held today in the various indigenous and Christian societies in the world. Another avenue for the account of origin of man is science.

Science : the claim of palaeontologist is that man descended from the same ancestors in form of large apes such as chimpanzee, the gorilla and monkey. Palaeontologist are those who study the origin  of man from fossils. This claim is embodied in the popular work of evolution done by Charles Darwin in 1859.

Darwin claimed that man evolved from a continuous transformation of various biological organisms. In other words, evolution in a very simple term, means that life progressed from one celled organism to its highest state the human being , by means of a series of biological changes taking place over a million years. From its simplest form, evolution asserts that the first speck of life on earth arose by itself from inanimate matter. You can imagine this from your simple  example of metamorphosis.

From the  king line of inanimate matters developed varieties of swamp plants. After this evolved the amphibians and reptiles. In most cases, scientists contend that the first set of organism were tadpoles and other water creatures. The fish were said to be a Developed set of tadpoles and the first set of vertebrates and later to reptiles.

Transformation of this nature continued to the level of the most related animals such ad gorillas, monkeys and chimpanzees. They are called primates.

A physical examination of the 'anatomy of monkey and gorilla shows that they resemble man in most  respects. They are hairy and this prevent s them from cold

Their heads and eyes are of human nature

Origin of Man in Africa

Archaeological evidences  reveal that early man originated from Africa. The evidence of man development from apes are incomplete and recent claim has it that relics found in south and east Africa revealed the origin of man.

We will examine the various stages which man has undergone.

However the skull of the earliest man found in East Africa, in Kenya, shows man in his ape like form. He has a very narrow jaw which prevented him from being able to speak. He could not have been able to hold his head erect.

Much more recently , the remains of homo Habilis were found. Habilis hear means ability

This is a stage of the origin of man whose organs of sight, touch, heating and movement of the body were developed like ours, but had a smaller brain capacity. He could make fire and possibly shape crude stone tools from rocks.

Their skulls resembled those of apes. Their posture was like that of the apes. One unique characteristics of the homo erectus. 'Erectus' as it implies indicates that man could stand up straight at this level. Yet, his face was still ape like , but the bones of his thigh and legs showed that he could stand up straight.

In ever respect, he developed in brain and skill than his predecessors. He could think more clearly than them, and even had a sort of language. But when compared to the modern man, he could not reason well.

Man reached his last stage of beibg  called the homo sapiens, the wiser  Man and physiology and anatomy of the fossils were much much like ours. He could  reason like us. He developed a distinct language, and a mode of worship.

They lived in community Like the primitive men and had a part of the brain controlling thought and speech, which  was larger than that of Homo Erectus.

There is no doubt that the modern man is a species if homo sapiens.

Early homo sapiens made tools and clothed themselves with the skin of animals. They built their shelter with the little knowledge they acquired upon which are now developing.

The Homo sapiens approach to life was based on superstition and the magic matter than on science. He thought that his hunting and farming could be successful if he offered sacrifice to his gods. His religion was influenced by fear and ignorance. This is why he worshiped fore and thunder. He also worshiped sun which he thought helped his crops to grow.

A famous archaeologist L.S.B Leakey who also discovered in 1963 that private life began in Africa found a fossil which  he called Kenya pithecus wickeri from a cave in Kenya. His fossil was dated back to about 13 to 15 million years ago.

These various evidence found in a rift valley around lake Victoria in Tanzania and fort ternas in Kenya in east Africa and Botswana in south Africa make us accept the fact that modern man evolved from Africa, more than a million years ago.

It is from here that the individual human beings spread to other continents of the world , especially to Asia and Europe.
