The collected specimens of organisms can be kept alive in the laboratory by different means. Small aquaria can be used for aquatic forms, cages for insects, wormery for worms and vivaria for coexistence of small plants and animals.
Some of the animals can be killed and preserved in 70% ethanol in labelled specimen bottles. To kill small animals, cool them first (in a refrigerator) and place them in 50% ethanol. To kill larger animals, place them in bottles containing cotton wool soaked in kerosene, chloroform or ammonia and screw the lid on.
