About 300 years ago, Robert Hooke, an English scientist, looked at a thin slice of cork through his crude microscope. He saw that it was made up of ' a great many little boxes'. In 1665, he published drawing of these 'boxes' which he called cells after the Latin word meaning ' small room'. What Robert Hooke saw were the cell walls of dead cork cells. It was only 150 years latter, with the widespread use of improved microscopes, that progress was made on the nature of the cell. By now, scientists realized that the Important part of the cell was its living contents, not the wall.
