Alimentary Canals and Digestion Of Food

An alimentary canal is adapted for breaking up food into smaller pieces; producing digestive secretions; and absorbing digested food and water. Though alimentary canals of different animals have similar functions, they show variation in structure according to the complexity of the animals,  And the kind of food the animals feeds on.

A digestive system is made up of the alimentary canal and the associated glands and organs which produce some of the enzyme rich secretions that bring about digestion.

The enzymes and reactions involved in the digestion of food are basically the same in all organisms, from a unicellular protist the amoeba to a human being. So, we shall only study digestion in detail In the human being.
