Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood do not mix as they pass through the left and right side of the heart respectively. The main arteries and veins are shown clearly. The liver is the only organ that receives a double blood supply from the heart:
• One from the hepatic artery containing blood rich in oxygen; and
• Another from the hepatic portal vein from the gut containing blood rich in digested food
