The cell is the simplest bit of living matter that can exist independently. We see this in unicellular organisms which show all the basic characteristics of living things; namely, nutrition, respiration, movement, excretion, growth, irritability and reproduction.
Cells exhibit a variety of shapes and sizes. Some are round, square, rectangular , star shaped, and a few can change their shapes. They range from extremely small bacteria cells (1 um) which can only being swing through a powerful microscope to the large yolk cell of an ostrich egg (100 mm). Cells also show a wide variety of functions.
