Only about 40% of the energy in a glucose molecule is stored in the 38 ATP molecules. The rest is released as best energy. This is used in birds and mammals to maintain their body cells and fluids at a constant temperature. Excess heat energy is lost to the surroundings.
Most of the chemical energy in the ATP molecules is used to power
• anabolic processes such ad the synthesis of enzymes, proteins, hormones, pigments and lipoproteins;
• mechanical work such ad muscle cell contraction;
• movements like active transport and phagcytosis; and
• electrical work such as the transmission of nerve impulses.
