Location and Characteristics of Communities

There are different locations for various communities depending on the purpose for which the community was established. For agricultural purposes communities are established on flatlands, valleys and on hill slopes if only the lands are fertile. A town or village may be established at various locations without any relations to the fertility of the soil. This situation may arise because of political, social or economic reasons.
One cannot easily enumerate all the  community. But there are certain characteristics that are common to all communities.

Characteristics of Communities

A. Members of a community live in a defined area and co operate to certain extent. In a community, a person is supposed to play the role of one's position without allowing personal feelings to obstruct or interfere with others roles and to develop strong feeling about fellow communities members. For example, one cannot protect his property without the cooperation of other members of his community.

B. Members of a community have common goals and aspirations. Members of a community organise themselves along  well defined ways in order to achieve their common interests.

C.  There are clearly defined and roles for any given community. Communities are stratified: each member of a community occupies a certain. Position and thus performs certain. Duties assigned to his position.

D.  Members of a community are related. Community members are related by family, kinship, ethnic, cultural, historical, religious , territorial, etc ties. Therefore , members of a community feel as one family unit
