Classification of Living Organisms

 • Biologist classify organisms in the following hierarchy of groups : Kingdom, phylum , class , order, family, genus, species (most organisms per group <-- --> fewest organisms per group).

 • The binomial name that identifies each type of organism is made up of it's generic and specific names, e.g. the binomial name of human being is homo sapiens.

 • Most biologists currently favour the classification of living organisms into five kingdoms: Monera , Protista, Fungi , Plantae and Animalia.

 • A virus is considered to be non living. It does not have a cell structure, and only reproduces inside the cells of other living organisms.

 • Monerans are unicellular Procaryotes. Protists are unicellular Eucaryotes. Fungi are mostly non motile, multicellular organisms which are saprophytes or parasites.

• Plants are non motile, multicellular Autotrophs. Their cells are enclosed within rigid cell Walls, and contain chloroplasts. They manufacture food by photosynthesis. Plant include the Thallophytes, bryophytes and Tracheophytes. Tracheophytes include the flowering plants which are the largest and most advanced plant group.

 • Animals are motile, multicellular heterotrophs. They include invertebrates and vertebrates. Invertebrates are animals without backbones.

 • Vertebrates are animals with backbones and an internal skeleton of cartilage or bones.
